Melanie is a dedicated disability advocate with a political science background and extensive leadership experience on local, state, and national boards. She focuses on education, mentorship, and policy advocacy informed by lived experience.
Melanie's Civic Action Plan:
Melanie is continuing her work through the Kolb Foundation for Disability Education to build a sustainable model for Self-Advocate Leadership Training (SALT). SALT is a curriculum that she helped bring to Nebraska which was originally developed by and for disability advocates in Florida.
The goal of SALT is to equip people with disabilities with the leadership skills, confidence, and practical tools needed to advocate for themselves, influence decisions that affect their lives, and strengthen the civic power of their communities.
Melanie’s goal is for every participant to gain enhanced self‑advocacy skills and a stronger sense of personal agency. Self advocacy expands into deeper leadership capacity and greater civic participation. Graduates of SALT join a leadership circle where they support one another to engage in public processes, advisory roles, and community initiatives. With time and effort, Melanie’s work will bring together stronger community networks, connecting participants with peers, mentors, and advocacy organizations.
