The Director of Operations leads Civic Nebraska’s internal systems to ensure financial health, regulatory compliance, and a strong organizational culture. This role oversees Finance and People & Culture functions – managed by energetic team members, directs core operational strategies, and ensures alignment with our mission, values, and long-term goals. The Director of Operations is based at Civic Nebraska’s headquarters in Lincoln, NE, and reports to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Financial Oversight
- Oversee day-to-day internal operations, building infrastructure that supports cross-program efficiency, transparency, accountability, and growth.
- Collaborate with the Executive Director and senior leadership to develop long-term operational plans and drive strategic initiatives.
- Analyze internal processes and recommend improvements to balance mission output with financial realities, increase workflow efficiencies, and align efforts and reporting across programs.
- Serve as lead contact for landlords, vendors, brokers, insurers, and other key partners supporting the organization.
- Supervise the Finance Specialist and serve as the organization’s lead financial officer, ensuring accuracy, sustainability, and accountability throughout the financial portfolio, including a variety of cash and investments.
- Lead the annual budgeting process and direct the annual organizational audit, in partnership with external accountants and staff.
- Ensure gifts and grants are allocated and tracked properly and in accordance with donor and grant restrictions.
- Design financial tools and systems that improve transparency, forecasting, and reporting across departments.
- Monitor c3/c4 affiliate financial compliance and reporting requirements, in coordination with the Finance Specialist
People & Culture Leadership
- Supervise the People and Culture Specialist and coordinate with the Volunteer and Intern Coordinator to lead strategies for recruitment, hiring, onboarding, and retention of paid staff.
- Maintain employee compensation and benefits programs, partnering with brokers and vendors to ensure competitive and equitable packages.
- Oversee performance management, including annual reviews, goal setting, and professional development planning.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable employment laws and HR best practices; respond to internal personnel matters with professionalism and care.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Uphold internal policies and ensure organizational compliance with all local, state, and federal regulations.
- Manage organizational liability insurance and assess operational risk and coverage needs regularly.

Salary & Benefits
This position will earn a salary ranging from $87,000 upward, dependent upon skills and experience. Benefit options include medical, vision, and dental insurance coverage, 80% covered by the employer. The position includes unlimited paid time off, a hybrid work schedule, and a 401K option. This is a full-time, exempt position.
