The Director of Communications guides Civic Nebraska’s external narrative and communication strategies to strengthen our public presence, advance our mission, and engage diverse audiences. This role oversees our communications team (1 FTE), oversees brand management and media relations, and directs organization-wide messaging to ensure clarity, consistency, and alignment with our values and long-term goals. The Director of Communications is based at Civic Nebraska’s headquarters in Lincoln, NE, is part of the Executive Leadership Team, and reports to the Executive Director.
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversees all aspects of the organization’s marketing and external communications.
- Enforces brand standards; conceives and executes marketing campaigns; creates and distributes paid, owned, and earned content; manages communications budget.
- Creates public awareness and a positive atmosphere for increased support and involvement.
- Plans and implements limited-scope communications assets and leads public relations efforts surrounding the organization’s events, initiatives, and activities.
- Represents Civic Nebraska to all community partners with kindness and the highest degree of professionalism.
- Builds systems, processes, and workflows to ensure effective internal and external communications.
- Reports to the Executive Director and serves on the organization’s senior administrative team.
- Works with program directors, the senior director of programs, and the development team to identify, build, and promote quality stories from within each program.
- Maintains Civic Nebraska’s social-media accounts and budget.
- Maintains a monthly communications calendar; coordinates and assists in content creation; and helps hold leadership team and staff accountable in re: communications goals.
- Creates and maintains the quality of all permanent communications materials (this does not necessarily include advocacy materials, etc.). Provides quality control on all external communication (text, design, presentation, photos, and graphics).
- Coordinates with partner organizations (e.g., Appleseed, ACLU, Civic Engagement Table) to ensure efficient communications between organizations and with the general public.
- Conceives, creates, and distributes an Annual Report for stakeholders; contributes to the quality of all printed materials for external audiences.
- Serves as the organization’s spokesperson if necessary and at the discretion of the Executive Director
- Supervises the Communications Specialist and, in partnership with the Specialist, coordinates data-driven initiatives and reports.

Salary & Benefits
This position will earn a salary ranging from $83,500 upward, dependent upon skills and experience. Benefit options include medical, vision, and dental insurance coverage, 80% covered by the employer. The position includes unlimited paid time off, a hybrid work schedule, and a 401K option. This is a full-time, exempt position.
