On Oct. 16 in Omaha, Civic Nebraska will honor six Nebraskans with Strengthening Democracy Awards for their efforts to build a more powerful democracy in the Cornhusker State. Before then, we’re sharing a bit more about each winner to share what makes them so special.
Civic Nebraska honors Ella Fundus with the 2025 Young Civic Leader Award for her exceptional service and commitment to empowering others, particularly youth with disabilities, through theater, mentorship, and advocacy.

Ella’s leadership is grounded in action. She has been deeply involved with the Penguin Project at the Lincoln Community Playhouse. This nationally recognized program pairs youth with disabilities with peer mentors to produce and perform musicals. Ella began as one of those peer mentors, walking beside her artist partners through rehearsals and performances, helping them gain confidence while ensuring their voices and talents were seen.
Over the years, she has grown into the role of Director of Artists and Partners, a leadership position that involves coordinating dozens of young people each season. Today, she oversees mentors, guides participants, and ensures the program remains inclusive, joyful, and transformative.
Her work with the Penguin Project reflects a broader ethic of leadership rooted in equity, empathy, and collaboration. On stage and off, Ella embodies what it means to create spaces where everyone is valued and respected. She has been a visible advocate for inclusion and opportunity, both through her volunteer work in the Lincoln community and on the campus of Nebraska Wesleyan U. Her peers recognize her as someone who doesn’t just talk about change but organizes and inspires it.
“What sets Ella apart is her vision as a next-generation leader,” said Lily Sughroue, who nominated Ella. “She is not waiting for an invitation to step up tomorrow. She is leading today. She builds bridges between people, advocates for access and opportunity, and encourages her peers to see themselves as active participants in democracy.”
This award also recognizes Ella’s broader commitment to shaping Nebraska’s civic future. She has consistently uplifted young voices and modeled how service can be a pathway to leadership. By investing in her peers, building inclusive spaces, and leading with authenticity, Ella demonstrates the impact one young person can have on an entire community.
Ella embodies the spirit of the Young Civic Leader Award: She believes in the importance of democracy, inspires those around her, and represents the bright future of Nebraska.
Meet Ella and her fellow honorees at Strengthening Democracy Awards on Oct. 16. RSVP today!

Fiona Bryant, Omaha
Fiona’s vision and initiative have made a statewide impact. As part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Fiona collaborated with the Omaha Public Library and the League of Women Voters to connect patrons with voter registration resources in preparation for the 2024 general election. She then developed a civic engagement guide to help Nebraskans stay involved year-round, a resource now available for libraries across the state. Recognized by the Nebraska Library Association as an Outstanding Volunteer, Fiona is praised as “a bright star of optimism for the future of libraries” and for her ability to link democratic ideals with everyday community life.
