Tell Nebraska leaders: Do not hand over unredacted voter records

The U.S. Department of Justice is demanding that Nebraska’s Secretary of State, Bob Evnen,  hand over unredacted voter data — including names, addresses, birthdates, driver’s license numbers, and even Social Security digits. This sweeping demand threatens your privacy, increases the risk of identity theft, and could undermine confidence in our voter registration system. Contact Secretary Bob Evnen today – tell him to delcline to share your private data and only provide what is already public.

Go to the Secretary of State website, select “Elections”, and utilize the following sample language to create your own message:

I am writing to urge you not to provide the U.S. Department of Justice with Nebraska’s unredacted voter registration data. While I understand the importance of accurate voter rolls, sharing sensitive identifiers such as birth dates, driver’s license numbers, and Social Security digits goes far beyond what our state law requires and places Nebraskans at unnecessary risk.

These identifiers are exactly what criminals need to commit identity theft and fraud. Once released, they cannot be taken back or fully secured. Beyond the risk of misuse, disclosure of such personal information undermines confidence in the very system it is meant to protect. Voters should never feel that registering to vote means sacrificing their privacy.

Nebraska already makes a public voter file available to ensure transparency, and that should remain the limit. I respectfully ask you to safeguard Nebraskans’ data by declining this federal request and to continue administering our elections in a way that upholds both integrity and trust.

Thank you for your service and for protecting the rights and privacy of Nebraska voters.
