Hello! I’m Sarah Cohen and I’m the development intern here at Civic Nebraska.
I grew up in Omaha but college at the University of Nebraska brought me to the capital city. I’m currently finishing up my English M.A. and TESOL graduate program at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I teach composition and ESL courses at the university and I particularly love working with students whose first language is not English. I love writing and my craft is informed by intersectional feminists like bell hooks and Audre Lorde and most of my inquiries revolve around civil discourse and writing and speaking across ideological differences.
I’m so excited to learn all that I can about development efforts and grant writing during my time at Civic Nebraska. These are five things you need to know about me.
I love traveling to places that are wet and cold. You can keep warm sandy beaches and I’ll take the Pacific Northwest any day. Oregon so far has been my favorite vacation yet — waterfalls and whale watching for life!
I love my cat! I was a resistant cat lady for most of my life but about a year ago a friend was fostering two homeless cat babies and I instantly fell in love. Our friend kept his brother, but we adopted a little grey tabby kitten. Remington Petripaws Walker is a handful and mostly misbehaved, but he is deeply loved by his two cat moms.
I love soccer! It doesn’t matter which cup or club—all of my productivity will be foiled if soccer is on. I prefer watching women’s soccer and one of the coolest experiences I’ve ever had was attending the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Vancouver. Not only did the United States win against Japan, I got to watch one of my favorite soccer players, Carli Lloyd, pull off a jaw dropping hat trick! I love soccer so much that my car is named after my favorite male soccer player, Luis Suarez.
I love French bulldogs. It started as a casual Instagram hobby and turned into an obsession. I fantasize daily about becoming a French bulldog mom. I met a French bulldog once and I started crying!
I really love Nebraska. I think the richness of this state’s artistic, musical, and cultural scene gets overlooked far too frequently. I love exploring new trendy parts of the city, trying new restaurants, and going to shows. Whether it’s a First Friday art show or exploring a brewery, I’m down for the adventure!
