The Nebraska 2026 Statewide Primary Election is one week away, on May 12. Here is a helpful checklist to make sure that you’re prepared:

Nebraska’s 2026 Primary Election is just one week away and now is the time to get everything in order.

The good news: voting doesn’t have to be complicated. A few quick steps ahead of Election Day can make the entire process smoother, faster, and less stressful.

Here’s your simple checklist to make sure you’re ready.

Check your voter registration

Even if you know you’re registered, it’s always worth taking a minute to double check. Over the past month alone, thousands of Nebraskans have had their polling places changed.

When you visit Nebraska’s voter check portal, you can:

  • Confirm your registration
  • Find your polling place
  • Verify your party affiliation
  • Track the status of your mail-in ballot (if you requested one)

Take a look at your ballot ahead of time

One of the easiest ways to make voting feel less overwhelming is to know what to expect before you arrive.

Instead of reading through everything for the first time in the voting booth, take a few minutes now to:

  • Review the candidates and races
  • Look into anything unfamiliar
  • Decide how you want to vote

Civic Nebraska’s Ballot Builder tool can help you see exactly what will appear on your ballot and even create a guide you can reference later in the voting booth.

Double check your ID for voting

Nebraska requires voters to show photo ID—but the requirements are more flexible than many people think.

Your ID just needs to:

  • Include your name and photo
  • Be issued by an approved institution (like the State of Nebraska, the federal government, a Nebraska college, or a hospital/assisted living facility)

A few important things to keep in mind:

  • Your ID does not need your current address
  • It does not need an expiration date
  • Even expired IDs are still valid for voting
  • If you forget your ID when you go to vote, you can still vote, but you must show your ID to your county election office within one week after the election.

Voting by mail? Track your ballot

If you requested a mail-in ballot, make sure you know where it is in the process.

You can track:

  • When it was sent to you
  • Whether it’s been returned and accepted

If you haven’t sent it back yet, we recommend dropping it off at a secure ballot box to ensure it is received and counted by Election Day.
