The Apiary: a fellowship to empower local civic leaders

A beehive is a hub of connection, collaboration, and purpose. That’s the inspiration behind The Apiary, a new statewide initiative from Civic Nebraska that launches its first cohort in December 2025.

The Apiary is designed to strengthen Nebraska’s democracy from the ground up by bringing together emerging leaders from towns, cities, and campuses across our state. It’s built on the idea that when individuals work together with shared purpose, the whole community thrives.

“Our democracy works best when everyday people step forward to engage in the civic process, not just during election season but year-round. The Apiary reflects that belief,” said Clara Wilson, Civic Nebraska’s director of Voting Rights Initiatives. “By investing in community-rooted leaders and equipping them with tools, skills, and networks, we’re ensuring that democracy flourishes from the bottom up.”

Over the course of a year, participants in the inaugural Apiary cohort will deepen their engagement with their communities, learn about local and state policy, and lead projects that address real challenges alongside their neighbors. They’ll also meet monthly with fellow members to cross-pollinate ideas, build relationships, and support one another’s work across Nebraska.

To make this commitment possible, each Apiary member will receive a $599 stipend, a $250 professional development fund, and coverage of travel, meals, and lodging for in-person gatherings. The result will be a new network of leaders who are prepared to bridge divides, build trust, and spark positive change throughout the state.

“The Apiary weaves together a stronger statewide network of leaders who understand their communities, who listen deeply, and who work together to create lasting change,” Wilson said.

Civic Nebraska created The Apiary to address a growing need for local leadership pipelines. In recent years, communities have faced increasing polarization, shifts in civic engagement, and fewer opportunities for residents to take on leadership roles. The Apiary aims to reverse those trends by empowering Nebraskans with the confidence and skills to lead.

Nominations for The Apiary are now open and will be accepted through Oct. 31, 2025. Nebraskans are encouraged to nominate themselves or others who demonstrate a commitment to community and a desire to strengthen democracy.

“Strong communities don’t just fall out of the sky. Everyday people work hard to make their communities strong. This is an opportunity to nominate the person in your life who steps up to make their community a better place,” said Chris Morton, civic action program manager at Civic Nebraska. “We encourage people from all walks of life, whether you’re a student, an organizer, or simply someone who cares deeply about your town, to submit a nomination today.”
