Idea of America Fellowship comes to central Nebraska

Civic Nebraska has opened nominations for the third cohort of the Idea of America Fellowship, a nonpartisan leadership development program designed to strengthen democratic leadership throughout the state.

This round of the program, which begins in early September and ends in mid-November, will focus specifically on Central Nebraska, with in-person gatherings planned in Grand Island, Kearney, and Hastings.

The Fellowship was created in response to growing partisan polarization and toxic political rhetoric, which have discouraged many thoughtful leaders from seeking public office. Rural areas, in particular, have been affected by depopulation and a corresponding decline in leadership and civic institutions. The Fellowship aims to reverse this trend by cultivating current and aspiring elected officials who are committed to democratic values and the skills of civil dialogue.

The Idea of America Fellowship provides a unique opportunity for participants to explore their role as civic leaders and deepen their understanding of American democratic ideals through engagement with key historical documents.

The program prioritizes balance among participants – politically, geographically, and generationally – and seeks Nebraskans who are clear about their motivations and goals for participating in the Fellowship.

Nominations are now open, and community members are encouraged to recommend local leaders who demonstrate the potential to positively impact their communities.

There is no cost to participants beyond their time and commitment. Civic Nebraska provides meals, overnight lodging, and travel reimbursement to ensure accessibility for all selected Fellows.
