Nebraska after-school programs under threat

The federal government’s FY2025-26 budget poses a serious threat to after-school programs across the country, including right here in Nebraska.

The proposed budget would likely eliminate 21st Century Community Learning Centers (21st CCLC)the only dedicated federal funding stream for after-school and summer learning, like our Youth Civic Leadership programs. For over 20 years, this program has provided safe and enriching learning environments for youth, particularly in rural and under-resourced communities.

In Nebraska alone, more than 17,000 students in over 130 programs rely on 21st CCLC support. These funds are critical not only for working families and student success but also for programs like Civic Nebraska’s youth-based initiatives, which use out-of-school time to foster leadership, civic learning, and real-world engagement. Without 21st CCLC, these transformative experiences for Nebraska youth would be severely diminished.

This move would have devastating consequences: fewer opportunities, more unmet needs, and an erosion of the support systems that empower young people to thrive.

But Congress has the final say, and your voice matters. Contact your members of Congress now. Urge them to oppose these cuts and protect after-school programs in Nebraska.

Together, we can stand up for the next generation of Nebraskans and ensure our youth continue to learn, lead, and grow beyond the school day.
