Municipal elections are approaching in Nebraska’s two largest cities, and Civic Nebraska is calling on community-minded individuals to step up as Election Protectors.
On May 6 in Lincoln and May 13 in Omaha, voters will head to the polls to choose their city leaders. Civic Nebraska will once again deploy trained, nonpartisan election observers across both cities to help ensure that every eligible voter can cast their ballot freely and fairly.
This year, Civic Nebraska’s Voting Rights Team is proud to partner with Common Cause Nebraska to deliver an even stronger Election Protection Program.
Election Protectors play a crucial role in our elections. These volunteers serve as independent eyes and ears at polling places, observing how elections are conducted and reporting their observations back to Civic Nebraska. That includes noting any irregularities or barriers, confirming ADA compliance, and gathering data about how our elections operate from precinct to precinct.
This information is vital, both in the immediate and long term. After each election, Civic Nebraska compiles a post-election report based on these observations. The report highlights both successes and challenges and is shared with county and state election officials, the public, and policymakers. It also informs future legislation that strengthens and modernizes voting in our state.
If you’re at least 18, live in Nebraska, and want to make a difference in your community, this is your chance. Sign up here. After registering, you will receive a link to a self-paced training video that provides all the necessary information before you head out to observe.
Since 2012, Civic Nebraska has organized nonpartisan observation teams for every statewide primary and general election. We’re proud of this history, and with your help, we’ll continue to ensure transparency, accessibility, and fairness at the polls in 2025 and beyond.
