Thanks to the Nebraskans who spoke up, showed up, and stood up for our state’s values, the Nebraska Legislature has set aside the latest attempt to dismantle our unique district-based Electoral College vote method.
Moments ago, the vote to invoke cloture on LB3, this year’s winner-take-all bill, failed by a vote of 31-18, two votes shy of the threshold. This means that barring a surprise, the legislative effort to end Nebraska’s unique Electoral College system is effectively over in 2025.
We’re grateful to you and all Nebraskans from across the political spectrum who made their voices heard repeatedly – writing emails, making phone calls, meeting with lawmakers, and showing up at the Capitol. Your sustained, thoughtful, and organized defense mirrored the very principle behind Nebraska’s split electoral vote system. Just as our system ensures that no Nebraskan is politically invisible, your actions proved that democracy is strongest when all voices are represented and engaged. You protected our electoral system in 2025 and, along the way, demonstrated why it exists in the first place.
That said, this issue is NOT over. LR24CA, a resolution to add winner-take-all to the state Constitution via ballot initiative, is still technically in play. Again, while it would be a surprise if that resolution came to the floor this year, we’ll remain vigilant and ready to continue advocating for a system that values every Nebraskan’s vote.
But today, we’re grateful. Your calls, emails, and conversations helped end this year’s latest misguided effort. You showed that when Nebraskans come together, we can win.
Thank you for standing up for – and for being a vital part of – Nebraska’s “Second House.”
With gratitude,
Your friends and neighbors at Civic Nebraska
