Civic Saturday returns April 26 – join us!

Civic Nebraska invites the community to its next Civic Saturday gathering at 11 am CDT on Saturday, April 26, at First-Plymouth Church, 20th and D streets in Lincoln. The gathering will take place in the church’s Mayflower Hall and is free and open to the public.

Civic Saturdays are a national tradition with a local heartbeat. Modeled after the spirit of a faith gathering but centered on the American civic tradition, they bring people together to reflect on what it means to live as powerful citizens in a self-governing society. There’s music, poetry, civic readings, and shared reflections along the way.

The gathering also is anchored by a “civic sermon” that connects our ideals to the current moment. Most importantly, there’s fellowship – building connections across lines of difference and strengthening the civic fabric of our communities.

The April 26 gathering is themed “Power Moves” and will be led by Lily Sughroue, Civic Nebraska’s Director of Civic Health. Attendees will hear inspiring readings from Kwame Gyamfi, a longtime youth advocate and bridge-builder, and original poetry by Karla Hernandez Torrijos, the first Student Storyteller in Residence at the Center for Great Plains Studies. Lincoln’s Jonathan Leach will perform live music on the keyboards. Finally, Steve Smith, a national Civic Saturday Fellow and Lincoln-based writer and speaker, will offer reflections on the nature of civic power and how it fuels our shared responsibilities to one another.

“Civic Saturday gatherings remind us that democracy is not just something we inherit. It’s something we must build together,” Smith said. “Whether you’re new to civic life or deeply involved, this is a moment to pause, reflect, and reconnect with others who care about the common good.”

Civic Nebraska has hosted Civic Saturdays since 2019, partnering with local leaders to create inclusive and meaningful spaces where people from all backgrounds can gather, share values, and recommit to their role in democracy.

No RSVP is required — but is kindly requested so we can plan for refreshments and snacks. Otherwise, all that’s needed is an open heart, a curious mind, and even a friend (or two). Join us for an hour of connection, inspiration, and civic purpose!
