Over the past week, we witnessed a formidable demonstration of what makes Nebraska unique – engaged citizens, thoughtful state senators, and the independence of our Legislature. When national pressure again resurfaced to shift Nebraska’s electoral vote allocation to a winner-take-all system, we turned to you, the “Second House,” to make your voices heard. You did not disappoint. Thanks to your vigilance and advocacy, state senators received a clear message.
We especially want to recognize State Sen. Mike McDonnell for holding firm on this issue and protecting the integrity of Nebraska’s traditional split-vote allocation system. The repeated attempts to overhaul our state’s process took precious time and energy away from real issues. Still, the correct outcome prevailed thanks to Sen. McDonnell and others who stood strong under relentless outside pressure.
In Nebraska, we don’t fit into the typical red/blue, left/right boxes. Our consensus-driven lawmaking, anchored in fairness and independence, sets us apart. Despite the noise in national and social media, such a last-ditch partisan maneuver hit a roadblock in Nebraska. We know nonsense when we see it, and that’s something to be proud of.
Let’s take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks to Sen. McDonnell – email him directly with your own words, or hit the red button below to send him a pre-written note of appreciation – and all the senators who stood strong. Your collective efforts have helped uphold what makes Nebraska special, and we are grateful for your unwavering support.
Now, we urge you to stay engaged – to take a bow but also take action. Make a plan to vote, ensure your family and friends are registered, and encourage everyone to have a voting plan. Civic Nebraska has many resources at our 2024 Election Central hub, including interactive maps, FAQs, key dates, and details on building your vote plan.
You can also support our continued defense of Nebraska’s split electoral college vote. We’re preparing for the fight to continue through the 2025 legislative session. Thank you for standing with us and for standing for Nebraska.
Onward,
Your friends and neighbors at Civic Nebraska
