Dear friends,
Perhaps you’ve seen the news: An outside pressure campaign to meddle with Nebraska’s Electoral College allocation process has re-emerged. This effort is un-Nebraskan, and we should never seek to change how our votes are counted to favor one party or the other.
The election is mere weeks away, and vast amounts of pressure is now on Nebraska lawmakers to change the game’s rules before it even begins. So let’s call this exactly what it is: a brazen attempt at a power grab by special interests, outsiders, and politicians who want to get their way at all costs – even if it means removing a powerful Nebraska legacy.
Remember: How Nebraska awards its electoral votes sets our state apart and unites us. While most other states give all their electoral college votes to the candidate who wins the popular vote in the state, in Nebraska, we can allocate our votes by congressional district. This is a Nebraska tradition because of our deeply nonpartisan heritage that promotes fair representation and boosts participation on Election Day.
Most importantly, Nebraska’s process means more Nebraskans get their voices genuinely heard. It ensures that our relatively small state is uniquely represented in national politics and gives every Nebraska voter a true sense of their participation being critical.
Tell our state senators NOW that if hyperpartisanship wins, Nebraska loses. Remind them that they work for Nebraska and Nebraskans, not party bosses in Washington D.C. Don’t delay – do it today.
Best,
