Here’s something that is fantastic to see – and something that can and should easily be done more often around the country. Douglas County Election Commissioner Brian Kruse will host an induction ceremony on Aug. 23 to honor and recognize 17 people who have dedicated at least 20 years to help ensure fair and honest democratic elections in Douglas County.
The honorees will receive a certificate of recognition in the presence of their friends and family. Secretary of State Robert Evnen and Douglas County Commissioners Chair Mary Ann Borgeson also will share brief remarks, with a reception to follow. The ceremony is at 3 pm at the Election Commission office, 12220 W. Center Road in Omaha.
Poll workers who will be honored include:
Lawrence Ahart (33 years of service), Sheri Bauwens (22), Walter Bures (22), Carrol Burrell (22), Deborah Clay (24), Randall Eastwood (27), Josephine Estrada (22), Janice Fulmer (22), Aaron Johnson Jr. (22), Dana Jones-Gray (29), Howard Koziol Jr. (22), Lila Marconcini (22), Monty McClean (31), Loyd Neve (21), Luanne Rosso (22), Stanley Standifer (31), and Lawrence Ziska Jr. (22).
“These workers have volunteered an average of 24 years of service to our county. They are the backbone of our democracy,” Kruse said.
Obviously, we agree: Poll workers are the frontline personnel who ensure that the democratic process functions smoothly, fairly, and with the utmost integrity. Their commitment contributes to the overall health of our democratic society and they should be recognized loudly, proudly, and frequently.
Congratulations to all of the honorees! Your democracy thanks you.
