It’s National Voter Registration Day – you know what to do!
By Civic Nebraska
Happy National Voter Registration Day! Today [Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022], we’re celebrating our most foundational American right and joining the tenth-annual national effort to get Americans registered.
First observed in 2012, National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday to honor our democracy. An estimated 4.7 million voters have gotten registered on this day over the past decade, and millions more voters have confirmed or updated their registrations.
Individuals and organizations around the United States will hold educational events and raise awareness of the day. That includes Civic Nebraska – join us from 2 to 4 pm today at the Center for People in Need, 3901 N. 27th St., where we’ll discuss Nebraska’s specific processes, talk about how voters can motivate others to get registered, and share some quick steps to ensure everyone’s registration is current and up to date.
National Voter Registration Day seeks to create broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise. That means educating Nebraskans and Americans about how to register, sign up for election reminders, request mail-in ballots, learn about early voting options, and more.
Census figures show that as many as one in four eligible Americans aren’t registered to vote – and every year, millions of eligible Americans aren’t able to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or are unsure how to register.
This is a day of civic unity: National Voter Registration Day is an opportunity to enjoy the rights and opportunities we all share and to celebrate our democracy. So check your status, get registered, encourage others to do the same, and help them if they need it. That’s participation with purpose!
