As spring begins to give way to summer, we have so many things for which to be grateful. First and foremost, we’re celebrating our steady, collective return to the three-dimensional world – as more and more Americans are fully vaccinated, closer interaction and in-person events are returning, and that certainly has put a spring in our step.
Here’s an item to put on your calendar: Our next Civic Saturday gathering will be 11 am on June 26 at Francie & Finch Bookshop, 130 S. 13th St. in Lincoln.
That’s right – as the pandemic wanes, our popular civic gathering is returning to real space. We hope you’ll come down to one of our favorite bookstores on June 26 and join us for an hour of music, poetry, readings, discussion, and reflection. Our theme for this gathering is “Between The Lines,” and we’ll focus on the importance of being engaged, informed, active citizens – and citizen readers.
But that’s not all! Immediately following the gathering, we’ll stick around to sign copies of our new book Reclaiming We: Twenty Everyday Acts to Strengthen the Common Good and Defend Democracy. This easy-to-read, inexpensive guidebook is a straightforward call to action for all Americans to become powerful, responsible citizens. Francie & Finch will have copies on hand; if you want to order the book so you have it before June 26, here’s a link to do that.
As for our gathering, here’s what to expect: Civic Saturdays are a place to come together in civic community, be inspired and encouraged to reflect and connect, and create new civic traditions that are joyful and communal. We’ll gather to hear poetry, readings of civic texts, sing, share thoughts and ideas, and hear a “civic sermon” from Steve Smith, the editor of Reclaiming We and a 2020-21 national Civic Saturday Fellow. We’ll also break into Civic Circles – small discussion groups – where we’ll talk and listen as friends and strangers.
Civic Saturday is free and open to all, and we hope you’ll join us on June 26. To help us get a sense of how many people we can expect, you can register for free at our Eventbrite page.
We look forward to kicking off summer with you in the most American way we can think of. See you on June 26!
