Civic Learning Week is here! From March 10-14, 2025, people across the country are celebrating and enhancing our understanding of civic education so that Americans of all ages are equipped to participate actively in democracy.
Civic Learning Week is a nationwide initiative that brings together students, educators, policymakers, and community members to emphasize the importance of civic knowledge and engagement. It’s a time to reflect on our roles as citizens and explore ways to contribute positively to our communities and country. Gov. Jim Pillen has proclaimed Civic Learning Week in Nebraska – in fact, Civic Nebraska joined the governor last week in the State Capitol’s Warner Chamber to participate in the proclamation ceremony.
No matter where you are in Nebraska (or elsewhere), you can participate in various virtual events to boost your civic knowledge and involvement. Here are a few we’re eager to see:
1. Trust Me documentary national watch party

Join a virtual screening of the documentary Trust Me, which delves into media literacy and the importance of discerning credible information in today’s digital age. Civic Nebraska had the honor of working with the filmmakers during a visit to Lincoln in 2024 – and we can vouch for Trust Me’s power to make you think more clearly about our modern information landscape.
2. Finding common ground: a nonpartisan conversation

Join an insightful conversation with former U.S. Reps. Loretta Sanchez (D-California) and Fred Upton (R-Michigan) as they explore how to find common ground across party lines. With their extensive experience in policy making, Sanchez and Upton will share their perspectives on overcoming political polarization, fostering constructive dialogue, and working together for the common good. This conversation will provide valuable insights into how lawmakers and voters can bridge divides and collaborate effectively amidst a highly charged political climate.
3. The American Revolution and civic learning

Join award-winning filmmakers Ken Burns and Sarah Botstein as they discuss – ahead of the anniversary of the War of Independence in April 2025, and the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence in 2026 – the upcoming documentary series, The American Revolution, premiering Nov. 16 on PBS. Burns and Botstein will join in conversation with teachers about the pivotal story of our country’s founding and the opportunities to focus on this history in the classroom that will provide fresh perspectives on the Revolutionary era and its legacies, as well as highlight the power of film and video to make high-quality civic learning come alive for students in the classroom.
4. National forum: Civic Learning: Many Voices, One Nation

This all-day forum brings together leaders from various sectors to discuss the importance of pluralistic civic education. Featured speakers include former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox, Former Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis, and author Sharon McMahon.
5. A discussion with Justice Sonia Sotomayor

Join Sonia Sotomayor, associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, as she discusses with U.S. students the importance of civic education for young people – and all Americans.
