Nebraska Supreme Court makes ruling in election commissioners case

By determining that current Nebraska law allows election commissioners in our largest counties to be appointed, the Nebraska Supreme Court has settled a contested aspect of election law.

Civic Nebraska has maintained that all county election commissioners in the state should be chosen by the voters and that the matter rested in the plain language of the Nebraska Constitution.

This legal challenge was necessary to inspect the statute’s constitutionality. It was not about our current election commissioners or the work they do every day. We are confident that Nebraska’s county election officials, appointed or elected, will continue to perform with excellence. Nebraskans are fortunate in that our elections are overwhelmingly efficient, secure, and transparent.

Civic Nebraska’s work to improve our elections also will continue. Our elections are sacrosanct, and they must be free, fair, and transparent at all costs.
