If you are a Nebraskan with a past felony, you are immediately eligible to vote once you are ‘off papers’ – having successfully completed your term of incarceration, parole, and/or probation.

1. Confirm your voting eligibility

›› Contact the Clerk of the District Court where your sentence was imposed, the Department of Corrections, or the supervising parole officer to confirm the completion of your sentence, enabling you to register and vote.

›› You can also reach out to the Secretary of State’s Office at 402-471-2555 or so*******@******ka.gov and they will attempt to identify your date of release.

›› It is best not to submit a registration form until you have confirmed your status.

2. Registering to vote in Nebraska

›› You must be a citizen of the United States.

›› You must live in Nebraska.

›› You must be 18 years old by the time of the general election in November.

›› If you broke the law with a felony, you must have finished all of your punishment, including probation and parole. If you are “off papers,” you are eligible to vote.

›› A court must not have told you that you can’t make decisions for yourself.

When is the last day to sign up to vote?

›› If you’re signing up on the internet, you have to do it before midnight on the third Friday before the election.

How do you sign up online?

›› All you need is a Nebraska driver’s license or a Nebraska ID card. You can sign up using a computer, tablet, or smartphone.

What if you don’t have a driver’s license or ID card?

›› You can use a paper form to sign up. You can print it from the Secretary of State’s website or pick one up at places like the DMV, post office, library, or public help offices. When you turn in your form, you’ll also need to show something that proves where you live, like a bill or bank letter. You’ll need to sign the form, too.
