SUMMARY:Webinar: Using TROVE to map Nebraska voter turnout
DESCRIPTION:Nebraskans can delve into a TROVE of voter participation rates for their city\, town\, or neighborhood thanks to Civic Nebraska’s new mapping platform. The interactive Tool to Reflect Overall Voter Engagement shows voter turnout from the November 2022 general election down to the ZIP Code and census tract – eg\, neighborhood – levels. In addition\, TROVE compares voter participation against demographic characteristics of census tracts to analyze which may correlate to higher or lower voter turnout.\nJoin our Civic Health Programs and Voting Rights Initiatives teams on Zoom at noon CDT (11 am MDT) on June 15 to discuss the new tool\, its potential uses and best practices\, and how you can share your self-guided findings with the public.\nREGISTER FOR THIS VIRTUAL EVENT HERE

SUMMARY:National Voter Registration Day
DESCRIPTION:National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. It has quickly gained momentum since it was first observed in 2012\, with more than 5 million voters registered to vote on the holiday to date. Celebrated every September\, National Voter Registration Day involves volunteers and organizations from all over the country hitting the streets in a single day of coordinated field\, technology\, and media efforts.\nOmaha: 11 am to 1 pm with Elevate Omaha at Metro Community College’s Fort Campus\, 5300 N. 30th St.\nLincoln: 2 to 4 pm with OutNebraska at The Foundry\, 211 N. 14th St.\nAccording to U.S. Census data from 2020\, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year\, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline\, don’t update their registration\, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day efforts are designed to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote\, creating broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.\nThe holiday is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS)\, the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED)\, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC)\, and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).\nREGISTER ONLINE TO VOTE IN NEBRASKA

SUMMARY:Voices & Votes: Democracy in America
DESCRIPTION:When American revolutionaries waged a war for independence they took a leap of faith that sent ripple effects across generations. They embraced a radical idea of establishing a government that entrusted the power of the nation not to a monarchy but to its citizens. That great leap sparked questions that continue to impact Americans: \n\nWho has the right to vote?\nWhat are the freedoms and responsibilities of citizens?\nWhose voices will be heard?\nHow do you participate as a citizen?\nHow do we encourage more people to participate in our democracy?\n\nVoices and Votes: Democracy in America is a springboard for discussions about those very questions and how they are reflected in local stories. Our democracy demands action\, reaction\, vision\, and revision. From revolution and suffrage\, to civil rights and casting ballots\, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story – the story of democracy in America. \nVoices & Votes: Democracy in America opens at the Great Plains Black History Museum\, 2221 N. 24th St in Omaha\, on Dec. 1 and runs through Jan. 27.

SUMMARY:Statehouse Series: Legislative Rules Changes
DESCRIPTION:Last week\, the Nebraska Legislature’s Rules Committee advanced a series of proposed new rules that determine how the body functions. Among them: a proposal to weaken cloture rules from the current two-thirds of the body (33 votes) to a bare majority (as few as 25 votes). Another proposal would eliminate the practice of senators casting private ballots for their colleagues’ committee assignments.\nThese rule changes go too far. Instead of working on policies that will help Nebraskans\, senators are trying to change the rules to make it easier to pass extreme legislation and severely damage our Legislature’s nonpartisan guardrails.\nWhat can Nebraskans do to help preserve our Legislature’s tried-and-true traditions? At 7 pm CST / 6 pm MST on Monday\, Jan. 15\, we’re hosting a Zoom discussion and Q+A on these and other proposed rules changes\, which the Legislature will debate later this week.

SUMMARY:AI & Democracy Community Summit
DESCRIPTION:Recent advancements in artificial intelligence\, or AI\, have the potential to transform democratic systems\, processes\, and governance. AI-generated tools could help make our elections better\, but their ability to aggregate and then generate huge amounts of data – including disinformation – poses urgent risks to election integrity.\nJoin us Feb. 24 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications as we gather advocates\, researchers\, and everyday Nebraskans for a discussion about ways to minimize AI’s disruptive effects while maximizing its positive potential for democracy.\nThis event is free but registration is required.
