SUMMARY:National Election Hero Day
DESCRIPTION:On Nov. 6\, we will recognize the immense importance and work of election administration teams\, poll workers\, and more across the nation.\nElection workers and volunteers have a tough job. These critical members of our communities work hard to ensure that voters will be able to cast their ballots safely and successfully in 2023 – often working upwards of 20-hour days to make this election possible. Whether it’s for a first-time volunteer at a polling location or a long-time election worker\,  our community says thank you to our election heroes.\nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:National Voter Registration Day
DESCRIPTION:National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan civic holiday celebrating our democracy. It has quickly gained momentum since it was first observed in 2012\, with more than 5 million voters registered to vote on the holiday to date. Celebrated every September\, National Voter Registration Day involves volunteers and organizations from all over the country hitting the streets in a single day of coordinated field\, technology\, and media efforts.\nOmaha: 11 am to 1 pm with Elevate Omaha at Metro Community College’s Fort Campus\, 5300 N. 30th St.\nLincoln: 2 to 4 pm with OutNebraska at The Foundry\, 211 N. 14th St.\nAccording to U.S. Census data from 2020\, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. Every year\, millions of Americans find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline\, don’t update their registration\, or aren’t sure how to register. National Voter Registration Day efforts are designed to ensure every eligible voter has the opportunity to vote\, creating broad awareness of voter registration opportunities to reach tens of thousands of voters who may not register otherwise.\nThe holiday is endorsed by the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS)\, the National Association of State Election Directors (NASED)\, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission (EAC)\, and the National Association of Election Officials (The Election Center).\nREGISTER ONLINE TO VOTE IN NEBRASKA

SUMMARY:Webinar: Using TROVE to map Nebraska voter turnout
DESCRIPTION:Nebraskans can delve into a TROVE of voter participation rates for their city\, town\, or neighborhood thanks to Civic Nebraska’s new mapping platform. The interactive Tool to Reflect Overall Voter Engagement shows voter turnout from the November 2022 general election down to the ZIP Code and census tract – eg\, neighborhood – levels. In addition\, TROVE compares voter participation against demographic characteristics of census tracts to analyze which may correlate to higher or lower voter turnout.\nJoin our Civic Health Programs and Voting Rights Initiatives teams on Zoom at noon CDT (11 am MDT) on June 15 to discuss the new tool\, its potential uses and best practices\, and how you can share your self-guided findings with the public.\nREGISTER FOR THIS VIRTUAL EVENT HERE

SUMMARY:Legislative Session Recap w/Common Cause & Sen. Raybould
DESCRIPTION:Wondering about the impact of this year’s legislative session on Nebraska’s democracy? We’re here to help unravel the mystery. Join Civic Nebraska and Common Cause at 7 pm CDT (6 pm MDT) on Tuesday\, June 13\, for a webinar discussion about the legislation we saw this session\, what it means for our democracy\, and our priorities going forward.\nWe will be joined by State Sen. Jane Raybould of Lincoln. We’ll discuss how to navigate the new voter ID requirements that passed this session and our efforts to inform Nebraskans in time for the 2024 election. We’ll also recap the progress on pro-voter priorities\, like expanding mail voting\, limiting the influence of big money in our elections\, and restoring voting rights to Nebraskans who have served their time for felony convictions.\nRSVP NOW FOR THIS VIRTUAL EVENT.

SUMMARY:Nebraska Legislature: First day of 2023 session
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 4 marks the start of the 108th Nebraska Legislature\, which meets at the State Capitol in Lincoln. It is the first year of the 2023-24 biennium\, meaning it is a “long session\,” or 90 legislative days. Senators are expected to be in session until early June.\nWith 49 members\, the Nebraska Legislature is the smallest of any U.S. state. Unlike the legislatures of the other 49 states and the U.S. Congress\, the Nebraska Legislature is a unicameral legislature\, thus not separated into two houses. It is also nonpartisan and does not officially recognize its members’ political party affiliations.\nResources:\n›› Information about the legislative process\, the history of the Nebraska Legislature\, general information about unicameralism\, and an in-depth explanation of the budget process.\n›› The Nebraska Legislature’s ADA Notice\, tips on testifying at hearings\, the rules of the Legislature\, legislative district maps\, photos of the Capitol\, and a glossary.\n›› The  Unicameral Update is an online news source produced by the Clerk of the Legislature and maintained throughout the session.\n›› Planning to visit? SUMMARY:PURPLE Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Did you know a study found that 1 in 6 Americans stopped speaking to a family member or close friend after the 2016 election? On July 28\, we’re hosting an online screening of a new film from Resetting the Table that captures the concerns and humanity beneath our national conflicts. Please join us!\nPURPLE tells the story of Americans with opposing viewpoints investigating their differences and discovering the concerns and experiences that lie behind each other’s positions. Filmed in rural Wisconsin and Iowa — in a swing region within two bordering swing states — PURPLE models a rare\, mediated conversation that uplifts and inspires even while going toward the heat of passionate political differences.\nThe screening and post-screening discussion offer a structured opportunity to capture the thinking of the core characters on their own terms\, as well as to explore the value of doing so for our democracy.\nSAVE YOUR SPOT TODAY!
