These critical members of our communities work hard to ensure that voters will be able to cast their ballots safely and successfully in 2023 – often working upwards of 20-hour days to make this election possible. Whether it’s for a first-time volunteer at a polling location or a long-time election worker\,  our community says thank you to our election heroes.\nLEARN MORE

SUMMARY:Voices & Votes: Democracy in America
DESCRIPTION:When American revolutionaries waged a war for independence they took a leap of faith that sent ripple effects across generations. They embraced a radical idea of establishing a government that entrusted the power of the nation not to a monarchy but to its citizens. That great leap sparked questions that continue to impact Americans: \n\nWho has the right to vote?\nWhat are the freedoms and responsibilities of citizens?\nWhose voices will be heard?\nHow do you participate as a citizen?\nHow do we encourage more people to participate in our democracy?\n\nVoices and Votes: Democracy in America is a springboard for discussions about those very questions and how they are reflected in local stories. Our democracy demands action\, reaction\, vision\, and revision. From revolution and suffrage\, to civil rights and casting ballots\, everyone in every community is part of this ever-evolving story – the story of democracy in America. \nVoices & Votes: Democracy in America opens at the Great Plains Black History Museum\, 2221 N. 24th St in Omaha\, on Dec. 1 and runs through Jan. 27.

SUMMARY:AI & Democracy Community Summit
DESCRIPTION:Recent advancements in artificial intelligence\, or AI\, have the potential to transform democratic systems\, processes\, and governance. AI-generated tools could help make our elections better\, but their ability to aggregate and then generate huge amounts of data – including disinformation – poses urgent risks to election integrity.\nJoin us Feb. 24 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Journalism and Mass Communications as we gather advocates\, researchers\, and everyday Nebraskans for a discussion about ways to minimize AI’s disruptive effects while maximizing its positive potential for democracy.\nThis event is free but registration is required. SUMMARY:Walking To Fix Our Democracy: Lincoln
DESCRIPTION:Rick Hubbard\, an 82-year-old Vermont man\,  has been walking across the United States and having conversations about making U.S. democracy more inclusive\, responsive\, and effective for all. In May\, Rick has been putting one foot in front of another across Nebraska\, and now he’s zeroing in on our Capital City. His journey will eventually end in January 2025 in Washington\, D.C.\nJoin us at 2:30 pm CDT on Wednesday\, May 29\, at Hamann Rose Garden at Antelope Park in Lincoln – where we’ll meet up with Rick for a leg of his journey through the Star City. We’ll walk together to Shelter No. 1 at Antelope Park\, where we’ll all have a chance to hear about Rick’s adventure so far\, the planks of a small-d democratic reform platform\, and learn about efforts in Nebraska to make democracy fairer and more representative for all.\nHere’s our local route. We’ll start by walking north along 27th Street toward Capitol Parkway. Then we’ll head east on the Rock Island and Billy Wolff trails past the northern edge of the Lincoln Children’s Zoo. Once passing A Street\, we’ll walk a short distance to Shelter No. 1 in Antelope Park.

SUMMARY:Planting Party at Pepe's
DESCRIPTION:We’re hosting a planting party from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday\, June 12\, at Pepe’s Bistro\, 1311 S. 11th St. in Lincoln. We’ll plant veggies in raised community garden beds at 11th and B streets and continue painting Pepe’s community mural in the alley. All are welcome to join in the fun! We may have some extra plant seedlings for you to take home\, too! \nWith Pepe’s brick-and-mortar business slowing due to road construction on 11th Street and his food truck engine dying over the weekend\, now is an especially great time to come out to Pepe’s and support his business. Pepe is always giving back to our community\, and I invite you to come out tomorrow and give back through planting\, painting\, and/or eating some great vegan food!
