SUMMARY:Civic Saturday: JUST\, LIKE THAT
DESCRIPTION:In a time of deep anxiety\, disconnectedness\, and political polarization\, we need a place to come together in civic community to reflect on and rededicate ourselves to the values and practices of being a contributing member of civic life within the United States. Civic Saturday began in Seattle and is now in more than 100 towns and cities across the country – including Lincoln.\nAt each gathering\, we connect around the values and practices of being an active citizen\, reckon with and reflect on our nation’s creed\, and build relationships that create new civic traditions that are joyful and communal. There will be music from Jack Rodenburg\, original poetry from Bianca Swift\, reading of inspiring “civic texts” from Alicia Phillips and other community members\, a “civic sermon” from National Civic Saturday Fellow Steve Smith\, and time for socializing in “civic circles.”\nThe theme of June 25’s gathering is Just: Like That\, and will focus on ways we all can create a more justice-oriented society. This gathering is free and open to everyone. Join us!\nThis gathering is free and open to everyone!\n\nSAVE YOUR SEAT!

SUMMARY:Housing Rights Night @ Lincoln City Council
DESCRIPTION:Join us to make Monday\, June 27\, housing rights night at the Lincoln City Council meeting. In 2020\, the Lincoln City Council published the Affordable Housing Coordinated Action Plan. This plan was created with the knowledge that Lincoln is lacking affordable housing\, and the need only continues to grow. Community advocates made their voices heard through the creation of this plan\, and it’s time to make our voices heard again for housing rights.\n\nDuring the City Council’s comment period on June 27\, join us to highlight a policy we hope to see introduced as an ordinance soon: an end to source-of-income discrimination. The public hearing is in Room 112 of the County-City Building\, 555 S 10th St.\n\nHave you ever seen a rental posting that says something like “no vouchers” or “no Section 8”? For neighbors that use housing vouchers to secure affordable housing\, these blanket statements mean that at least 20 percent of voucher users are unable to ever use them. Lincoln can change this so we are fully utilizing our housing affordability tools and ensure that more Lincolnites can find a place to call home.\n\nYou can participate in this housing rights night by:\n1. Being present. Sit with us at City Council to show community support for these issues.\n\n2. Share a comment with the City Council during the comment period. Need some guidance crafting your testimony? Email Lizzie at lturner@neappleseed.org and check out this Guide to City Council Comments: https://bit.ly/3O0N8q7\n\n3. Call/email/tweet City Council members to let them know you care about affordable housing in Lincoln. Learn more about source-of-income discrimination here.\n\nThe Council meeting starts at 5:30 pm CDT and the comment period will take place once it finishes with the set agenda. Please note that the start time of the comment period can vary.

SUMMARY:PURPLE Screening & Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Did you know a study found that 1 in 6 Americans stopped speaking to a family member or close friend after the 2016 election? On July 28\, we’re hosting an online screening of a new film from Resetting the Table that captures the concerns and humanity beneath our national conflicts. Please join us!\nPURPLE tells the story of Americans with opposing viewpoints investigating their differences and discovering the concerns and experiences that lie behind each other’s positions. Filmed in rural Wisconsin and Iowa — in a swing region within two bordering swing states — PURPLE models a rare\, mediated conversation that uplifts and inspires even while going toward the heat of passionate political differences.\nThe screening and post-screening discussion offer a structured opportunity to capture the thinking of the core characters on their own terms\, as well as to explore the value of doing so for our democracy.\nSAVE YOUR SPOT TODAY!

SUMMARY:Collective Impact Lincoln: Housing advocates meetup
DESCRIPTION:Lincoln needs more safe and more affordable housing! Let’s get together with our fellow neighbors passionate about advocating for safe and affordable housing to share a meal\, discuss strategies\, dream big\, and plan some next steps to take together. Join us from 5:30 to 7 pm Friday\, Sept. 30\, at Peter Pan Park for dinner and conversation.\n\nHousing is unaffordable to 45% of Lincolnites who rent at all income levels\, and 86% of extremely low-income families spend more than one-third of their income on rent. We work for housing\, housing needs to work for us. As advocates\, what can we do to move our city to a more equitable housing system? How can we ensure all of our neighbors have a safe and affordable place to call home? Let’s find answers to these questions together. In community we can support each other in our advocacy to find solutions to some of our biggest problems and work towards something better.\n\nThe purpose of this event is to give time for housing advocates to connect with each other in person and talk through ideas\, visions\, and plans. We will have some conversation prompts and small group facilitation for attendees who like a little more structure. If you’re more of a go-with-the-flow type\, you’re also welcome to wander and mingle!\n\nDetails:\n\n– Dinner from Báhnwich Cafe with vegetarian options. Let us know if you have other dietary restrictions.\n\n– There will be light activities for kids\, and there is a playground near the shelter!\n\n– We’ll be gathering in and around the Open Shelter located in Peter Pan Park. It is an ADA-accessible location.\n\n– Please let us know of any other accessibility needs!

SUMMARY:Nebraska Legislature: First day of 2023 session
DESCRIPTION:Jan. 4 marks the start of the 108th Nebraska Legislature\, which meets at the State Capitol in Lincoln. It is the first year of the 2023-24 biennium\, meaning it is a “long session\,” or 90 legislative days. Senators are expected to be in session until early June.\nWith 49 members\, the Nebraska Legislature is the smallest of any U.S. state. Unlike the legislatures of the other 49 states and the U.S. Congress\, the Nebraska Legislature is a unicameral legislature\, thus not separated into two houses. It is also nonpartisan and does not officially recognize its members’ political party affiliations.\nResources:\n›› Information about the legislative process\, the history of the Nebraska Legislature\, general information about unicameralism\, and an in-depth explanation of the budget process.\n›› The Nebraska Legislature’s ADA Notice\, tips on testifying at hearings\, the rules of the Legislature\, legislative district maps\, photos of the Capitol\, and a glossary.\n›› The  Unicameral Update is an online news source produced by the Clerk of the Legislature and maintained throughout the session.\n›› Planning to visit? SUMMARY:Legislative hearing: LB225 (civic education)
DESCRIPTION:LB225\,  a civic education bill from State Sen. George Dungan of Lincoln\, will receive a public hearing at 1:30 pm CST on Jan. 23 in room 1525 of the Nebraska State Capitol. The bill would add a student representative to each Nebraska school district’s Committee on American Civics\, which ensures that social studies curriculum provides foundational civic knowledge and aligns with state standards. \nEach district committee is required to hold at least two public meetings annually and ensure that the district’s social studies curriculum is accessible to the public. It also assesses the district’s alignment with state social studies standards and teaches knowledge in “civics\, history\, economics\, financial literacy\, and geography.” \nIn addition\, LB225 would enable students to meet high school civic education requirements by serving as a poll worker. This new option would join a series of existing standards and activities\, including taking a written test\, attending and participating in public meetings\, and writing papers and making presentations about what they have learned. \nCivic Nebraska supports this legislation and encourages those in support to submit written testimony or to testify in person.

SUMMARY:Race\, Religion\, and Social Justice Conference 2023
DESCRIPTION:Tri-Faith Initiative and the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Department of Religious Studies invite you to the second annual Race\, Religion\, and Social Justice Conference on June 7-8 at the Tri-Faith Commons in Omaha.\nThis year’s theme is “Building Bridges of Hope.” Hope is not simply wishful thinking. We invite multi-sector approaches — nonprofit and civic leaders\, diversity\, equity\, access\, and inclusion practitioners\, community members\, educators\, physical and mental health practitioners\, artists\, religious communities\, and scholars.\nREGISTER FOR THIS EVENT

SUMMARY:Webinar: Using TROVE to map Nebraska voter turnout
DESCRIPTION:Nebraskans can delve into a TROVE of voter participation rates for their city\, town\, or neighborhood thanks to Civic Nebraska’s new mapping platform. The interactive Tool to Reflect Overall Voter Engagement shows voter turnout from the November 2022 general election down to the ZIP Code and census tract – eg\, neighborhood – levels. In addition\, TROVE compares voter participation against demographic characteristics of census tracts to analyze which may correlate to higher or lower voter turnout.\nJoin our Civic Health Programs and Voting Rights Initiatives teams on Zoom at noon CDT (11 am MDT) on June 15 to discuss the new tool\, its potential uses and best practices\, and how you can share your self-guided findings with the public.\nREGISTER FOR THIS VIRTUAL EVENT HERE
