Community Conversation: Winner-take-all

On Monday, April 7, 2025, Nebraskans are invited to a community gathering at 7 p.m. CDT in Ralston to discuss LB3, a proposal before the Nebraska Legislature that could significantly alter how the state allocates its electoral votes in presidential elections. This important event is being held the evening before lawmakers are scheduled to debate LB3 and take a first-round vote.

Why you should attend

LB3 would dismantle Nebraska’s current system of allocating its electoral votes by congressional district—a method that sets the state apart from nearly every other in the nation. Under the current system, Nebraska awards one electoral vote to the winner in each of its three congressional districts, with two additional votes going to the statewide winner. LB3 proposes to replace this model with a winner-take-all approach, in which all five of the state’s electoral votes would go to the statewide winner — effectively silencing district-level results and reducing the influence of urban and competitive districts in presidential elections.

What will happen at the gathering

The April 7 gathering will provide a space for residents to learn more about the bill, hear from local experts and advocates, and discuss the broader implications for Nebraska voters. With the Legislature poised to consider LB3 the very next day, this is a timely opportunity to get informed, get involved, and make your voice heard.

See you soon!
