As part of our Back To School Giving Campaign through Oct. 13, Civic Nebraska is highlighting our outside-of-school programs and sharing what they see. Earlier this month, Director of Development Sarah Walker checked out Civic Nebraska’s Community Learning Center at Lothrop Magnet Elementary School in Omaha.
Walking into the Lothrop Magnet Community Learning Center starts with a picture of students patiently waiting in line in the gymnasium. Within minutes, they are enthusiastically and warmly welcomed by Miss Equasha – that’s Equasha Smith Gooch, Civic Nebraska’s fearless leader of our Lothrop CLC – and her amazing staff.
After greeting each and every last student by name and giving them a warm smile, Equasha watches as the young learners from kindergarten to fourth grade smoothly file by, one by one, on their way to get a hot and healthy snack.
With snack time accomplished, it’s time for today’s clubs. Students are excited, and disperse into their clubs by age group – and the fun begins! Skateboarding Lessons, Ladies in Information Technology, Girl Scouts, Art, Recreation, and Healthy Living activities were just a few of the options students were able to participate in on this particular weekday.
Civic Nebraska’s Lothrop staff, community partners, and school administrators work seamlessly together to create an engaging, lively, and fun experience for our young civic learners. We can’t wait to come back for another visit!
